Stephen Vicary - Print Statement 2012

Printmaking is such an inspirational medium in itself. Often by just cutting into a lino or wood block, drawing or wiping an etching plate can pull you in allsorts of unexpected directions.

It is an extremely versatile medium, but does require patience and discipline. Skills are developed over a long period of time and cannot be hurried, especially as you are often dealing with dangerous materials, such as Nitric Acid or carcinogenic substances.

As Such, there is no guarantee as to the finished result. From the beginning to the end disasters often happen, usually after hours of work and preparation.

In saying that, the very act of printing can bring new delights in creating images. This can also lead to a series of self discovery pieces, such as textured abstract collographs or large scale figurative fun images. It's very nature creates powerful art, even when pieces are subtle and images familar to everyone.

It's diverse medium is such, that any artist whatever their 'training,' is allowed to use it in any way they see fit. It can focus the mind and strengthen working practice as well as allow for experimentation.  A great way of breaking new ground and old rules. It's perfect for stetching the imagination, and for me, exploring some old art allegients and new kinds of fresh mark making.

"Art is kept alive not by the established trade in it, but by the desperate efforts of art-hungry individuals to create and recreate it out of nothing for its own sake."

George Bernard Shaw

"Painting is on the very bone and marrow of me. I feel in myself such a creative power."

"I am often as rich as Croesus, not in the money, but rich because I have found in my work something to which I can devote myself with heart and soul, and which gives inspiration and zest to life."

"That which fills my head and my heart must be expressed in drawings or pictures."

Vincent Van Gogh
